Welcome
to the LAVA Gallery section
In case you were wondering
what the floor above the main lobby looks like - this is it.
Our showcase of selected works. We've divided it into 3 Sections:
Section
#1 covers Client
Work, Section
#2 internal projects
and results from our Mad Scientists in the Lab and Section #3 the FREE STUFF. Clicking
on the thumbnails will bring up the full size image.
Special
note on the free
textures and models - feel free to download them and use them
for your personal work - just remember they're copyright ©1999 LAVAProductions
and cannot be
used for commercial purposes without permission from us, or we'll
have to unleash our lawyer (and he has very many teeth, filed
down to sharp points).
Additional work can be viewed at Core.html
(2d Design) and see some of Bob's old 3D stuff at the 3D
Gallery (please excuse the dust)....
SECTION I CLIENT WORKS
|
|
|
|
|
|
Client: J Walter Thompson/Merrill Lynch |
|
Category: 3D Art (Billboard) |
|
Summary: As a tie-in with a new television
campaign launched at the beginning of 2000, Merrill Lynch
decided to port the "3D Bull" concept over to
billboard advertisements. LAVA Productions was brought in to
generate a high-resolution 3D version of the Merrill Lynch Bull
icon for billboard-size art (30' - 40' tall) as well as a
black-and-white version to be used in full-page newspaper ads.
The first image is the 3D Bull as originally requested. The
second image is the "toned down" version that was
decided on. Last shot is LAVA Productions' Creative Director
Robert Stava in front of one of the actual billboards, this one
at 46th and Broadway in Times Square. Pay no attention to the
rather ominous billboard on the left. The artwork appeared on
various billboards throughout the New York City area as well as
in full-page spreads in the New York Times and USA Today.
Special thanks to David Gorsky at J. Walter Thompson for all his
additional work and patience on this project. |

|
| Client: SinVin Realty |
| Category: Architectural Rendering |
| Summary: When SinVin Realty Corporation of NYC
needed to clearly demonstrate to potential buyers what
the proposed renovations of their building at 29th Ninth
Avenue in Manhattan would look like, they came to LAVA
Productions for a solution. The project required taking
AutoCAD files supplied by their Architectural Firm, Selldorf
Architects LLC, importing them into 3D MAX, adding appropriate
textures and then outputting two print resolution views
for an upcoming brochure . The first two images are the
final artwork, the last an earlier test composite using
a photo of the actual location. |

|
| Client: Target For Tonight |
| Category: Computer Game Modelling |
| Summary: LAVA Productions is currently engaged
in developing the 3D Aircraft models for the upcoming
on-line game "Target For Tonight", a WWII
night bombing simulator. Pictured here are renders
of the first model developed, a British MKII Lancaster
bomber. A detailed article on the sim was covered
in the summer 2001 issue of "PC Pilot",
featuring shots of this Lancaster. Check back for
samples of additional aircraft as they are developed,
and don't forget to check the official Target For
Tonight Website
for futher details. |

|
| Client: Giokas Financial Services/NetSetGo |
| Category: 3D Web Design |
| Summary: LAVA Productions was contracted by Rochester's
NetSetGo to develop an interactive website
for Giokas Financial Services. The goal was
to create a personal interactive experience
for GFS clients using 3D rendered environments
for the top level pages with animated rollover
states. Shown here are static images of the
three main areas of the site: The Main Lobby,
The main Client area and the Visitor's center. |

|
|
|
| Client: IBM/Cole Communications |
| Category: CD-ROM Interface Design |
| Summary: Throughout the past year LAVA Productions
has designed a variety of interfaces for various IBM CD-ROM
presentations, contracted through Cole Communications.
The images here are samples from this ongoing body of
work. |

|
|
|
Client: National Warplane Museum |
|
Category: Web Site 3D Visualization |
Summary: The National Warplane Museum is one
of the few aircraft museums that maintains vintage WWII aircraft
in flying condition.
The objective was to create an interactive screen utilizing 3
renderings of WWII aircraft in the museum's collection. The models
were created using scale blue-prints and photographs of the actual
NWM planes. The first image depicts the aircraft in the hangar
setting, the additional images are detail studies of the P40
"Flying Tiger" created for the scene in 3D MAX. |

|
|
|
Client: J. Walter Thompson/Merrill Lynch |
|
Category: 2D Web Design |
|
Summary: This project was developed as an addition
to the existing Merrill Lynch site to help generate a 'buzz'
throughout the Companies' worldwide offices in conjunction with
the release of a new upcoming television campaign (consisting
of three commercials). The entire adjunct site was revealed in
sections over a span of weeks as each commercial aired.
The top image was one of the
three the initial banner ads that appeared as a teaser by asking
a question (related to the particular commercial), leading to
the "jump" page (middle image) which supplied additional
yet not complete information, finally taking the user to the
'pay-off' - the section which gave all the answers and background.
The site (and the campaign) was
a huge success for Merrill Lynch. The client was so pleased with
the web design they had each of the three jump page montages
recreated as posters. |

|
| Client: Craig Herron/"A Fall from the Clouds" |
| Category: Entertainment/3D |
|
Summary: "A Fall From the Clouds" is a
digital film currently in production at Herron Designs. The
film is set in France, 1917, and utilizes both live-action
actors and CGI generated models. LAVA Productions helped out
by creating this lo-res Halberstadt CLII, a German Bomber,
to be used in a few background shots. For more information

|
Client: Buck & Pulleyn/Xerox |
|
Category: 3D Visualization/Animation: Tradeshow Booth |
|
Summary: For an upcoming trade show Xerox
faced a problem: a part of the booth was to be dedicated to
their new Docutech technology. The dedicated area would have a
small footprint but still prominently convey branding and
information in a way that would draw in the attendees. LAVA
Productions was brought in to develop a solution and create a
360 degree animated visualization of it. We came up with a
compact design that combined the look and feel of the Docutech
line with touch controlled flat-screen monitors. |

|
|
|
|
Client: Buck & Pulleyn/n-Soft |
|
Category: 3D Visualization: Tradeshow Booth |
|
Summary: N-Soft, a French software
company, was looking to spice up it's trade-show presence with a
booth design that would be both unique and tie in with a
proposed advertising campaign. The solution: a booth design that
would have the inviting feel of a park as well as allowing the
unobstructed flow of attendees. Created to scale, multiple views
of the design were then made available to the client. |

|
|
|
|
|
Client: R Hildebrand |
|
Category: Furniture Design |
|
Summary: This project demonstrates how 3D can be
used to develop real-world objects. In this case the client had a
concept for a coffee table. Using 3D MAX, a couple of visualizations
were developed (1st Picture), trying out various wood types in the
process (Oak, Teak, Cherry, etc.). After various discussions
regarding design practicality, aesthetics, lumber pricing, etc, the
second design was decided on, to be built with Mahogany.
Working closely with a furniture
builder, detailed blueprints were then developed by LAVA (2nd
Picture) including a "Cut template" which worked out the
best way all the various pieces should be cut out of available
lumber to minimize waste, as well as calculating the exact cost of
materials.
The final picture shows the finished
table.

SECTION II INTERNAL WORKS
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Title: Brazil Renderer Tests |
| Category: 3D Stills |
|
Summary: These images are some initial tests
using the Brazil Renderer (www.splutterfish.com)
to simulate "real world" lighting in 3D MAX.
All scenes were rendered on an Athlon 1.4Ghz with 1GB
of RAM. The first image uses only one directional light
and the Brazil test material (Render time: 14 min).
The second is a glass/transparency test with a diffused
lighting set-up (two omni-lights projected through self
illuminating "white cards") using the Brazil
test material (Render time: 54 min). The last has a
duel purpose: to see how the renderer works with "standard"
3D MAX textures as well as using the built-in 3D MAX
"sunlight" function. In this case, the sun
was set to Northern Tunisia, July 6th, 2pm, 1943. This
scene also utilizes the "Skylight" function
of the Brazil render with an environment map applied.
We'll be posting additional
tests as they become available.

Title: Studio Apartment |
|
Category: 3D Architectural Visualization |
|
Summary: This scene was created in 3D MAX from
an open loft design by Gabellini Associates, by simply looking
at a photograph. Next time we'll try something with blueprints.
Much easier. |

Category: Animation |
|
Summary: In Part I of a self-promotion piece,
we discovered the origins of the LAVA Logo: apparently this guy
has been forging stuff for us in the basement - didn't even know
he was on the payroll. Probably because he's not exactly from
this dimension. Regardless, here are a few frame grabs from the
opening sequence....

Title: AIR WAR ETO: Escort to Berlin |
|
Category: Game Concept |
|
Summary: One of our internal projects is the
"AirWar" series, a modular WWII Flight Simulator put
together the way we'd like to see a game done. The first installment
is "Escort to Berlin", covering the the later years
1943-45 in the E.T.O.
We can't give you too many details
but we can share with you some of the graphics that have been
developed. The first two images are the front and back cover
designs. The next two are sample interface screens. The fifth
image, a P51D cockpit, gives a good idea of the cockpit detail
we're planning to develop and the last an early version of an
actual game aircraft....
We'll keep you posted on latest
developments. |

Title: Polaroid to the Landlord |
|
Category: 3D Visualization |
|
Summary: Here in NYC we have all sorts of pest
control problems. Roaches. Mice. Rats. Mini-Raptors. This
started out as a study in dirty textures, then things got
carried away.... |
